Sector Report
  • Per capita consumption of electrical power in India is still far behind that of developed countries, India’s per capita is at 347 kWh, while that of developed countries is in the region of more than 10,000 kWh.
  • Un-viable tariff structure has lead to precarious balance sheets of SEBs, leading to huge losses in the revenues and reduction in the future expansion of capacity by SEBs.
SEBs have become structural impediments, adversely affecting the very flow of private capital that the power sector requires to meet the needs of the country.
  • Total installed capacity of power generation stations under different utilities was 99560 MW, on September 30, 2000.
  • T & D losses are in the region of 20%, which is just double of what is their in the developed countries.
  • Investment in transmission sector should be equal to that in generation but in India the ratio is not 1:1, rather 1:3 in favor of generating capacity.
