Maruti 800 to compete with Tata`s Rs 1 lakh car

Maruti Suzuki India, facing growing threats to its 50% share of car market, may cut the price of its cheapest car in India to counter Tata Motors`s proposed Rs 100,000 car, reports Business Standard. Suzuki`s cheapest car in India, the Maruti 800, now costs from Rs 192,124 in New Delhi showrooms. Cutting prices may help Maruti Suzuki maintain dominance in its biggest market as the company faces greater competition from Tata and foreign rivals including General Motors and Hyundai Motors. Shares of the company closed down Rs 10.4, or 1.05%, at Rs 984.2. The total volume of shares traded at the BSE was 256,258.

Tata Year 2008

They may well be making Jaguars and Land Rovers soon, but CNBC-TV 18's Indira Kannan reports that the Tatas are eyeing business beyond that in Detroit. The automotive sector will be a major focus area for the Tata group in the United States in 2008 - and that's regardless of the final decision in the sale of Ford's Jaguar and Land Rover units. Tata Motors is widely expected to be named as the preferred bidder in the sale, and the Tatas expect to hear from Ford early in January. But for now, David P Good, Chief Representative, North America, Tata Sons, said, “I'm not going to go beyond what our chairman Mr Tata has said, which is that we've expressed interest, we've made a bid on Jaguar and Land Rover, and I think we're going to leave it at that. We wouldn't be doing it if we didn't think we could do it and do it well.” That last remark may be a dig at the Jaguar dealer who questioned whether American consumers would buy a luxury car from an Indian

Don't see RBI cutting rates in January: Goldman Sachs

Tushar Poddar, Asia Economics Research, Goldman Sachs in an interview to CNBC-TV18 said that overall inflationary pressures in India may be contained. He expects aggregate demand growth to moderate and sees inflation in the band of 4-4.5% in 2008. He believes appreciation of rupee will take sting out of inflation. He said a 10% hike in fuel price will boost inflation by 0.6% over 12 months. He further added they do not expect RBI to cut rates in January. RBI may cut rates in second half of 2008. He expects Indian GDP growth rate of 8% for 2008. He, however, is bearish on the US economy at this point. He said they are forecasting below-trend growth for US in 2008. Poddar added housing prices in US have not bottomed, which will impact credit conditions. Food prices and likely fuel price hike will pose inflationary risks. He also said tightening of Chinese credit is negative for global sentiment. Excerpts from CNBC-TV18’s exclusive interview with Tushar Poddar: Q: You have done some numb

Buy IFCI at Rs 60-65: Choksey

Deven Choksey of K R Choksey Securities is of the view that IFCI is available at a PE of 4.5 on EPS of Rs 17 and it has around Rs 1,100 crore worth of quoted/unquoted investment into the books, which translates about Rs 18-20 per share. So if the opportunity comes in the market, it would be a good opportunity to buy Rs 60-65 levels. Choksey told CNBC-TV18, "There are two ways to look at IFCI. The deal, which failed through, has resulted into a good amount of mark to market loss for the people because of the stock opening straightway 25% lower compared to yesterday. So to a greater extent that marks to market loss will be troubling the people who have been carrying forward their position. To that extent, some amount of adjustment is natural in the market.” He further added, “From fundamental side, the stock is not all that bad at around Rs 70-75 levels. On a Rs 17 kind of an earnings and around 4.5 kind of a PE multiples and with around Rs 1,100 crore worth of quoted/unquoted inves

t's power play of a different kind and one that many companies including Reliance Industries and Tata are betting on. We're talking about solar power. Why everyone's betting on the sun? CNBC-TV18 report finds out... Bangalore-based solar power generation company, Tata BP is looking at doubling its capacity to 60 MW annually. Moser Baer is expected to start generation of solar power of 100 MW capacity by mid-2008. Sources informed CNBC-TV18, Reliance Industries, which is in the midst of setting up its 10 MW solar power plant in West Bengal, is also looking to hike capacity to up to 1000 MW per annum. Indian equities vulnerable to US subprime crisis

Concerns over US subprime credit defaults will continue to nag Indian equities market in 2008, said Morgan Stanley analysts. In a recent strategy note, the investment bank said the coming year is likely to witness a soft landing in the domestic economy, compression in India’s relative equity valuations, slower earnings growth, peaking in corporate activity, record equity issuances and lower trading volumes. “Our base case still calls for downside to equities and is premised on disappointment in US growth and its related impact on risk appetite,” the report said, adding, “given India’s premium valuations, the market’s tendency to gain beta in falling markets and the incessant speculation that seems to be the key driver of markets currently, Indian equities are vulnerable to underperformance if the US macro stumbles.” Morgan Stanley said volatility would continue as the forecast range for the Sensex is going to be in the range of 11,022 to 28,000. The point of debate for 2008 would be ho
