Bhuvan, India's response to Google Earth

Source : rediff   Bhuvan, India's response to Google Earth, will be launched in March 2009 and will provide high resolution imagery data of the order of five metres which would be of great help for real-time exercises, including disaster management and military operations. "Google Earth is providing high resolution data in the order of less than a metre. But the data is two to three years old. But Bhuvan will provide the relevant data for any real-time exercise," SK Pathan, head, Geo Informatics Data Division, Isro, told PTI. For real-time exercises, the latest data is a guiding force, he said. It can show the topography, altitude and other features of a location. The data could be of use to manage public services, internal security, town planning and infrastructure development activities. However, it is not yet decided whether the data can be put on the web as it could be misused. Some locations can, however, be blurred or blocked due to security reasons. "

Sridhar Vembu : The Smartest Unknown Indian Entrepreneur

In an interesting article on Forbes titled 'The Smartest Unknown Indian Entrepreneur' , Sramana Mitra profiles Sridhar Vembu, the founder and CEO of an Indian firm called AdventNet. The firm today, is a '100%, bootstrapped, $40-millio-a-year revenue business that sends $ 1 million to the bank every month in profits'. The whole piece is worth a detailed read, but two points stand out. The first one is this: "We hire young professionals whom others disregard," Vembu says. "We don't look at colleges, degrees or grades. Not everyone in India comes from a socio-economic background to get the opportunity to go to a top-ranking engineering school, but many are really smart regardless. "We even go to poor high schools, and hire those kids who are bright but are not going to college due to pressure to start making money right away," Vembu continues. "They need to support their families. We train them, and in nine months, they produce at

Market forcast : RNRL High Risk High return

Market Forecast : Market is likely to test the levels of Sensex 10000 provided Nifty 2850 level is held. This is a pull back rally and thus unless Sensex moves above the level 10600 a bull run can be considered. One can say that the bear market is not over and thus more importance should be laid on stop loss. This market will be in bear grip atleast till the next month in new year. Corporate results are not likely to show a rosy picture as slowdown is a reality but only favourable aspect is that long-term story of India is intact and showing positive direction Tip for Dec 12th 2008 Buy Reliance >1261.1,1297,1306,1354 sl 1248.8 Buy RNRL>55.1,57.9,61 sl 50.9 ( High risk High return stock) Buy Adlabs>182.1,185,187.25,193 sl 178.8 Buy Punj Llyod.157.1,160,162,168 sl 155.5

Defence Pension : Where are we going ?

Source : Indianeconomy.org   The total strength of the defence employees has risen from nearly 362,000 in 1960 to 1.3 million today. The defence pensions bill, which is over 50 percent of the central government's pensions bill, has also risen exponentially since the 1960s. It has grown nearly tenfold from Rs. 1670 Crore in 1990-91 to Rs. 15,244 Crore in 2007-08; and is currently over two-thirds of the military salary expenses. The subterfuge of removing defence pensions expenditure from the overall military expenditure, in vogue since 1985, has turned the spotlight away from this issue. More than three percent of defence employees retire every year. The bulk of this group is of soldiers, who constitute 85 percent of the defence forces. There is an average in-service death rate of 1.2 percent for the defence employees, largely due to counterinsurgency operations. Early induction age and early retirement age implies a younger age cohort for 90 percent of the defence employees co
