Advice from Warren Buffett...

Warren Buffett, Chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, is arguably the world's greatest investor and the third richest man with a net worth exceeding $52 billion (Rs 213,200 crore). He is also a great philanthropist: last year he declared plans to give away over $37 billion (Rs 151,700 crore) in charity, to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. But he is not just a man with a large heart and a matching wallet. Also known as The Sage of Omaha, he is also full of wisdom and wit. Here are some of his gems of advice for investors who look at the stock market to make a fortune, culled from various publications, his speeches and writings: • 'Never invest in a business you cannot understand.' • 'Always invest for the long term.' • 'Remember that the stock market is manic-depressive.' • 'Buy a business, don't rent stocks.' • 'Price is what you pay. Value is what you get.' • 'Stop trying to predict the direction of the stock market, the economy, i

Reliance Power IPO

It could be interesting if Reliance Power has made up its mind that they will go with Rs 10 issue. Reliance Power IPO is probably a big marky event for the market because I think some people maybe underestimating the kind of rub off in terms of sentiment that issue might have. It is a big issue, it's from Reliance, it has been talked about endlessly and it has fired up the one sector which is leading the market which is power and we do not know whether this is the case we are only discussing a news report. If indeed it is a case that Reliance said okay I am finding it difficult to push through my Rs 2 face value offer, Sebi is more or less saying no; so let me go ahead with Rs 10 so what if the price is Rs 400 a share. But I will still go ahead with it at Rs 10 face value and if that means that in the next few weeks Reliance Power gets its issue done. I think it is positive from a sentiment point of view and it will probably much that it will suck out a lot of liquidity from the sy

The Sugarcane Mess

The situation with the sugar industry has gotten more bizarre, with the Allahabad HC stepping in and mandating that the mills buy sugarcane at Rs. 110 per kilo and start processing. While on first thought, it seems quite funny that the high court is getting into matters it shouldn’t get into, such as fixing of a market price, the situation on the ground is quite grim. And the main reason for all this is heavy intervention by the state; in my opinion, heavier intervention than what we saw in the bad old days of Indira Gandhi. Back then, the state fixed a price and said “take it or leave it”. Here, even that option doesn’t exist. When the sugar mills didn’t like the state-fixed price of Rs. 125 per quintal, they decided to stop procurement and production. However, the state intervened and didn’t even allow them to do that, and now the HC has ordered them to start production, albeit after sourcing at a lower cost. . The difference between procurement in sugarcane, and that in other commod

Good opportunities in fertilizer stocks

Rahul Mohindar of Viratechindia is of the view that there is good short term opportunities in fertilizer stocks. Mohindar told CNBC-TV18, "Fertilizer stocks look very interesting ever since Chambal Fertilizer has broken out of that Rs 49 mark. We are seeing a lot of strength there, so there too, one is looking at a good 15%-20% upside, so very good short-term . opportunities." He further added, "On the flip side if we look at technology, which has been the weaker sector and possibly will be the first to crack if the market really goes down because there is so much of imbedded weakness as I would put it in that space. Maybe I would look at going short at TCS for a good Rs 90-100 downside and stocks like Wipro for about Rs 60-70 downsides. So, it could be interesting play where you are looking at shorting technology utilizing this kind of run up to sell a fairly good price and buy into some of the stronger frontline stocks.".

Pakistan - Emergency & Economy

While declaring the emergency on 3 November, the Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf lamented - I am observing that Capital and Business that was flowing into the country is now stopped - they are now questioning whether to invest here or not Pakistan will remain stable. Our economy, the livelihood of our nation which improved over the last 7 years - in economy, in livelihood, in infrastructure, roads, ports, airports, railways, telecommunication, mobile telephone, landlines, rural telephone, information technology, building and construction, the entrepreneurs across the land, the rapid development across Pakistan, the thousands of industries launched, water irrigation, dams, canals, canals with brick linings, water courses, and then the social sector, education, health on the primary and secondary level, and education at every level - on all these Pakistan was moving forward, all this. I am very saddened, God Forbid, that 7 years of hard work may be washed away. Shanta Devarajan,
