CitiGroup 3rd bailout could cost Vikram Pandit his job

India-born Vikram Pandit could well lose his job as the chief executive of Citigroup if the American Government comes in with yet another lifeline for the beleaguered financial services entity.

Citi has already received fresh capital injection to the tune of 45 billion dollars from the Federal government and officials way back in November reportedly had even discussed the option of replacing Pandit.

Pandit took over the reins of Citi in December 2007.

"... top government officials warned Pandit that a third trip to the taxpayer trough would probably cost him his job," the 'Wall Street Journal' reported today.

The daily said that Citi is in discussions with Federal officials which could result in the government increasing its ownership in the bank.

The report noted that in November last year Federal officials privately discussed the possibility of replacing Pandit.

"But the government decided not to remove him, in large part due to a dearth of qualified replacements," it added.
 
In addition to 45-billion dollar capital injection, the government had also agreed to guarantee the bank's assets worth more than 300 billion dollars.

Trend watch: Industrial growth decelerates in July

The just released industrial growth numbers point to a slowdown in the economy. The Central Statistical Organization`s quick estimates of Index of Industrial Production (IIP) for the month of July 2007 fell far below the expectations. The general index stands at 252.2, which was 7.1% in July 2007 compared with 13.2%, a year ago. The cumulative growth for the period April-July 2007-08 witnessed a decline at 9.6% as against 11.1% over the corresponding period of the pervious year. The industrial production for the mining, manufacturing and electricity sectors grew 4.9%, 7.2% and 7.5% respectively in July`07. During the same period in 2006, these sectors posted growth of 5.1%, 14.3% and 8.9% respectively. The cumulative growth during April-July 2007-08 over the corresponding period of 2006-07 in the three sectors has been 3.1%, 10.3% and 8.1% respectively compared with 4%,12.3% and 6.1%, a year ago, which moved the overall growth in the general index to 9.6%.
